THE INSIDE STORY OF AUSTRALIA'S HECTIC SELECTION MORNING time tem IND

Asteralia selector Tony Dodemaide has revealed Cameron Green and Mitch Starc both were not 100 per fit and were subsequently left out of Australia’s XI for the second Test.

Pat Cummins revealed at the toss that he would be his side’s sole quick bowler, with the Australians opting for three spinners in a team structure not seen since 2017.

Travis Head also replaces Matt Renshaw as the side’s only other change. There were still several line ups on the table on the morning of the second Test, yet Dodemaide, chair of selectors George Bailey, and Australia coach Andrew McDonald opted for the team on several factors.

Dodemaide revealed to media shortly after Pat Cummins won the toss and elected to bat the fitness issues surrounding Green and Starc but also suggested Head was preferred as more of an all-rounder option.

“The key point between Renshaw and Head was that we thought we were short, that fifth-bowling support in Nagpur was something that we lacked a bit of,” Dodemaide said.

“So even though he’s an off-spinner and bowls the same way (as Lyon and Murphy), that is a more robust option as a fifth bowler as a chop out as required.

“It’s a bit unusual going with three spin and one quick, there’s obvious risks around that, there’s risks around whatever we do.

“But we feel that the pitch here, we feel that spin will dominate the game again… there’s already substantial cracking in the area.”

Head impressed with the ball in Sydney and was seen as a strong spinning option for India, while Kuhnemann makes his Test debut with Baggy Green
